Let's Go Outside

Although British Summer Time (BST) is not officially over until 30th October (can't quite believe this), the weather in England throughout July before I went on holiday and the majority of August has been absolutely monstrous. Wind, rain, grey skies, cold legs.. the lot! It seems like we have hardly had any summer at all. But, I vow not to hide away my tan and continue to wear summer dresses and sandals as opposed to the coats, jeans and boots the rest of those who have given into the horrible weather have been sporting over the past week the weather has been at it's worst. I'm not sure if you are aware, but the British have a tendency and are historically known to moan about the weather far too much than is necessary (and is the reason why I will refrain from doing so in a few sentences time) - we shiver when it is too cold, moan when the sun appears because it's "too hot" and groan when the sun shines at the wrong time of the week (weekends, when everybody is back to work/school, etc.) 

So I thought it would be an apt idea to share with you some handpicked images from a range of editorials- a mixture of good/bad weather- of models who are all out in the open air, making the most of their surroundings, whatever the climate. All celebrate the outside in all it's glory and I think that's what the Brits should be doing whatever the weather. So, coat or no coat, get outside and explore. Pic of the week

As someone who acts and feels far less than her almost 21 years, I think this picture somewhat conjures up the image of being a child again. The way the curlers are thrown about the room in a haphazard manner, portraying the idea that girls love to do one another's hair/make-up/nails and the way the model sits on the floor are all things which remind me of being young again and immediately I am drawn back to my own childhood memories. Even the use of bright colour alone instantly makes one think of innocence and acting completely juvenille. And immature. 

WHO SAYS YOU ARE EVER TOO OLD TO PLAY GAMES AND DANCE AROUND THE ROOM LIKE A CRAZY PERSON? Yep, that's me.

The years may have passed but my youth certainly hasn't.

Young at heart.

LOVE it.

For a couple of weeks now my Dad has been re-decorating our bathroom (it's looking great- cream tiled walls, large cupboards and a big glass shower, although there is still a lot to be done) and today he has been working away with his iPod for company, listening to his music (a mixture of soft rock and alternative bands- The Jam, Joan Armatrading and Elbow...) and one particular song, which is one of his favourites (mine not so much)- Dancing in the City by Marshall Hain. Although, on looking at the album cover, the song of which is part of the Guilty Pleasures compilation CD's, I really loved it, instantly reminding me of a shoot entitled Distracted in the androgynous issue 4 of LOVE magazine.

Superbly styled with a glossy finish, it is expensive and professional looking even with the fun, interesting idea/poses and bright colouring. It's seriously amazing and certainly one of my favourites. I would recommend buying a copy of the issue (covered by Kate Moss and transsexual model Lea T) if you haven't already, just to lust over this shoot and to, as I do, cherish it- it takes pride of position on the top of my magazine stack amongst the issues of Wonderland, ELLE and 10.

Similar in styles- both are glossy and very, very sexy and the finish is something quite beautiful.

It's the year 1960...

Just got a little excited when I went online for my daily news fix and saw these amazing pictures of Fearne Cotton modelling her latest collection for Very. OK, they are not high-fashion, nor is she a model but I am absolutely obsessed (as I always say) with the 60s. And it wasn't about high-fashion then either. It was about revolution, music, youth culture, emancipation of women... and besides, Fearne has become a bit of a style icon over the past few years and she has her own great sense of style which should be celebrated. She is another successful woman in the media, whom I admire for this reason. I always ask my Mum what was it like to live then, forgetting that she was only a baby and an impressionable teenage throughout the 1970s (still, what a great time to have grown-up- I am adamant that I was born in the wrong era. Fake tan and ridiculous reality TV is not for me). 

I love the era shown in these photographs and I just wanted to share them with you. Whilst on the subject, I strongly suggest you buy April's issue of UK ELLE if you haven't already (before all copies are whisked from the shelves- I cannot seem to track down US Vogue in-store) if only to stare at one of my favourite editorials of the week, Silk Cuts (great name) which also channels retro glamour. I feel it is unlike the usual glossy style of ELLE- this appears to be more demure and soft looking, sexy and very, very feminine. 

It doesn't mean I will be rushing to buy anything, I just enjoy the era Fearne is so beautifully epitomising here with the bouncy hair, thick eye make-up and of course, the colourful Peter-Pan collared shift dress.

If only I could go back in time...

Gwen, you beauty.

When I peeled away the plastic from my ELLE today I literally shouted with joy. Wow, the cover is an amazing one. Even though a certain free newspaper ruined the surprise on my way up to London this morning, the collectibles cover is so much better. It is bold, blocked, bright just like the Spring/Summer catwalks and channels 1970s glamour with the clashing of the deep red shoes against the jade blue background. It's much better to see someone on the cover who is linked to the fashion industry (even remotely), rather than someone like Cheryl Cole. ELLE has always been my favourite and it is their covers that is just one of the reasons why I love it so much after all these years...

Daily dose of another favourite

When my ELLE magazine arrived yesterday, I was so excited to see the gorgeous and oh so pretty Carey Mulligan on the cover, looking beautifully sweet and elfin with her fab new crop. I feel like I am always blogging about people who I admire or simply love the 'look' of, but she seems to be a lot of people's girl crush at the moment, especially to style fanatics. She is certainly proving her status as a style icon, after landing 5 magazine covers this year and being awarded first place in Harper's Bazaar's annual 'Britain's Best Dressed' list for their December issue. She was described by Erdem as 'so Sixties French New Wave' and is the reason why I love her so much and which is showcased so impressively in that pastel Miu Miu dress at the Costume's Institute Annual Gala.

Model Behaviour

I am absolutely obsessed with models and completely fascinated by the exciting lives they lead, the clothes they get to strut down the catwalk wearing and the parties they are invited to, rubbing shoulders with the A-list of the fashion industry. Who can honestly say they wouldn't want that life? Fun, hectic, exciting, just a few of the reasons why I have the ambition of becoming a fashion journalist. I'm not tall enough to be a model anyway... Although there are not a long list of names on my favourite model list, there are a few who I adore and Sasha definitely comes out on top. She is featured in ELLE magazine this month, for their December issue where she comes in at number 12 on The Model Power List. I just love everything about her and she totally deserves to be credited for being, as ELLE quite rightly puts it, one of 'the biggest names in the industry'. ELLE, I couldn't agree more.
